Sylvia Fowles is One Busy B-Baller

sylvia fowles

Sylvia Fowles has been quite busy over the last few weeks; from the NCAA Finals, to the WNBA draft and now hopes of Olympic dreams. She has been coast-to-coast and back again.

All this in 2 weeks:

  1. NCAA Final Four Championships, Tampa, FL
  2. WNBA Draft, Tampa, FL
  3. In Chicago two days later, as the newest member of the Chicago Sky
  4. In Los Angeles for the Wooden Award banquet
  5. Off to Baton Rouge for a day
  6. Back to Chicago to practice with the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team
  7. 3 days later off to China for a week to play with Team USA in the Good Luck Beijing Tournament

All of this in 2 weeks! This hectic schedule won’t end any time soon as she has sights set on making the USA Women’s Basketball Team which looks to be a sure thing.

In Team USA’s first game of the tournament against Australia, Fowles got into a little foul trouble and finished with only 9 points and 4 rebounds in a 76-60 loss. But she came back on Sunday with 25 points, 18 rebounds and 6 blocks in a 92-60 win over Cuba. And she led Team USA to victory with 20 points and 10 rebounds in Monday’s game against South Korea.

Is it enough to make the team?

U.S. women’s coach Anne Donovan is basically using the week long tournament as a tryout session before she builds her final roster.

“We have a lot of great post players on this trip,” Donovan said. “We’ll have a different look and get a chance to see a lot of our top young players work with Lisa Leslie for the first time.”

Fowles, along with guard Candice Wiggins, forward/center Crystal Langhorne and center Laura Harper are also in China for the tournament playing for a spot on the team.

“I’m just looking forward to the opportunity,” Fowles said. “You really don’t know what way the coach is leaning, but I think I have a good chance (to make the team).”

Donovan has not set a date to announce the final roster. The team is expected to begin practice for Beijing on July 28. The first day of competition in Beijing is Aug. 9.
