As we approach the WNBA draft, the buzz around the number 1 pick is getting louder and more interesting.
Los Angeles, with the valuable number 1 pick, has heavy negotiating power as teams are putting players, draft picks and future draft picks on the table. Sparks owners Kathy Goodman and Carla Christofferson say they are open to the offers.
But let’s face it, that offer better be pretty good.
“Let me say this,” Goodman said. “It has been very interesting to talk to other teams to determine just how valuable the No. 1 pick is this year. For them in terms of what they might be willing to give up, and for us, in what we’d be willing to turn down.”
Chicago is right in the mix
Offering up the number 2 pick and All-Star forward Candice Dupree to the Sparks for the number 1 pick, Chicago is willing to trade.
Parker, a Naperville, Ill. native, would certainly put fans in the seats and would quickly become the “face” of the franchise. With such a young team and the talent developed over the last few years, Parker could be the ticket to a championship season.
And just how valuable is a number 1 draft pick?
It’s the difference between winning a championship or not and it’s really that simple. If you want a successful, winning, championship team you need at least one number 1 pick. A number 1 pick isn’t a guarantee to a championship team but it certainly improves the odds.
